LETTER TO OUR EDITOR, JOHN SHELLY
Dear Mr . Shelly,
Since you are the editor of the harper’s magazine, I wanted to talk to you about the « jailbird of the year . » I do not understand why you put Andrew Jackson as this man. He has been good to you, why? Because he let you have a say, about your opinion about slavery. Personally, if Mr. Jackson wouldn’t have been president I wouldn’t even think of writing this letter to you, since it wasn’t a democracy. He even said and I quote “ I weep for the liberty of my country when I see at this early day of its successful experiment that corruption has been imputed to many members of the House of Representatives, and the rights of the people have been bartered for promises of office.”
Putting him on this page is disgraceful! He was even nicknamed the people’s president, your president! Mr.Jackson had experience. He was even elected at the house of representatives, he knew his job. Plus, Andrew Jackson is dead, so it is SO irrelevant to put him as the jailbird of the year. So why don’t you concur with my opinion and instead put a spy as the jailbird of the year. Someone, that actually harmed you.
Sincerely,
A Southerner

The purpose or significance of this political cartoon
This political cartoon (above) talks about two men: a Southerner and a Northerner. These two men after making a deal chose to work together after a black man made them agree to work together. Before they came to an agreement the Southerner (on the left) threatened the Southerner to death. After this compromise, they both worked together, as they thought it would be a lucrative deal.
As you can see, there is corn from the northerner and cotton from the southerner as these were their benefits. I think the purpose of this cartoon is to show that if men work together and agree, they can go farther in life.

significance of this political cartoon
The significance of this political cartoon is to show that all southerers and northerners should be equal. They should be equal because as you can see one is very hungry and risks to get killed by going into the farm next door that would kill any southerner that came in there.
Since you cannot see the picture well, here is a resume
Girl when she is in southerners barn on the left " I wish I had food, just a little bit for once! Oh, I guess I'll have to risk death and go next door!
Girl when she is in northerners farm on the right " Yes! More food for the soldiers and my family.
